It’s New Years and we are all thinking about new beginnings. Well, so is the apostle John. “In the beginning…” he starts this famous gospel. As we prepare for another year of life and ministry together let us look to John to grab a few pointers.
Under the Old Covenant the people of God were not truly made clean the system they put their faith in. Not so with the gospel under the New Covenant. The blood of this covenant (the blood of Jesus), actually has the power of forgiveness within it. What is more, we are made holy under the New Covenant as God writes his laws on our hearts and gives us his holy Spirit.
How can God send people to Hell if He is love, people ask. But an equally challenging question is how a just God can send guilty sinners without punishment to Heaven. This is the question Jonah seems to have wrestled with in his day as he watched God forgive the brutal Assyrians.
